MINUTES

1. Meeting called to order at 12:30 p.m. by the President, Judy Anderson.

2. Motion made to accept the agenda (Bill Racz/Garry Burckholder) - carried.

3. Motion made to accept the minutes of the minutes of the 18th AGM of June 1996 (Dave Brown/David Andrews) - carried.

4. Report of the President - Judy Anderson

  • Originally CFBS was very much under water, but it is finally raising above.
  • Thanked the Executive for their efforts (especially Jim Fryer, Dave Brown, and Dennis Fitzpatrick).
  • Replacement for Honourary Treasure, Jim Fryer is Arthur Hilliker.
  • Looking for a new Chair Program.
  • George Biro is not able to assume the position of President, Judy Anderson has agreed to keep going for six months and Peter Dolphin as president-elect nominee will be president for the following six months and he then become president for another year.
  • CFBS represents NSERC with CBHR regarding MRC, Judy Anderson noted that CFBS agrees with this, and sees the need to maintain the understanding that CFBS represents the bio can community.

4.1 Science policy Summary report attached. (attachment 1)

4.2 It was moved by Peter Dolphin and seconded by Peter Canham that Jack Kornblatt and Maurice Hirst be declared the new members-at-large.

4.3 Motion made to withdraw from CBHR and making every effort to maintain a 2-way communication with CBHR. (David Andrews/Dave Brown) - carried.

Discussion Points

  • lobbying will be seperated twice
  • keep in contact with CBHR
  • keep the possibility of rejoining CBHR
  • we have invited CBHR to the meeting

5. Report of the Honourary Secretary - Peter Anderson

  • The meetings are very important for CFBS - expect Québec to be profitable.
  • Last year meeting in London, CFBS made 50k to support the Federation.
  • Next year in Edmonton we will have PENCE supporting a full day and GSC.

Closed by thanking the people for coming to the meetings, and hope they keep coming back.

6. Report of the Honourary Treasurer

6.1 Quickly walked threw the Auditors report. (attachment 2)

  • Lowered the cost of staff salary, no longer is an office manager. Thanked Paul Hough and Natalie Lamarche for their work at the CFBS Head office.
  • Revenues from membership took a big drop in 1996 due to the decrease in fees.

Motion that the 1996 Auditor’s report be accepted. - carried.

6.2 It was moved by Radan Capek and seconded by George Biro that the auditors, Robertson Hill be reappointed for 1997

7. Other Business

Proposal for 1999 Meeting in Manitoba. (attachment)

There will be a program committee meeting in Ottawa.

Motion to thank Judy Anderson as president of CFBS in a very difficult year - Unanimous
