Guidelines

  • The award will be given to an individual(s) who currently hold or who have recently (last term) held an elected public office at the Federal or Provincial level. Examples would be Federal or Provincial members of parliament, Federal or Provincial cabinet ministers, Prime Ministers or Provincial Premiers.

  • The award(s) will be given on an annual basis to qualified individual(s) who represent riding(s) at or close to the site of the annual CFBS meeting. The award(s) will be presented to the individual(s) at an appropriate time during the annual CFBS meeting.

  • The award(s) will consist of a framed certificate of merit and will be presented to the individual(s) by the current President of the CFBS.

  • Awardees will be selected by the Local Organizing Committee for the current year's annual meeting in conjunction with the Executive Director of CFBS and will be submitted to the current Executive of CFBS for approval.

  • The CFBS will prepare the framed award certificate.

  • No more than TWO awards many be given in any one year.

  • Awardees will be selected upon the basis of the following criteria:-

(a) The awardee must, over a period of at least one elected term of office, have demonstrated a strong commitment to the advocacy of science within his/her sphere of influence. This could include the promotion of funding for science at the parliamentary and cabinet levels and in the press. Advocacy of University, Institute and Governmental research. Promotion and advocacy of research to other elected members and within the civic service. The formation of National and Provincial policies and legislation designed to improve research and research funding in a Province or within Canada as a whole. The promotion of Canadian Scientific Research at the International level.

(b) The awardee, through his/her advocacy, must have had a demonstrable positive impact upon scientific research, research funding or science policy in a Province or Canada as a whole. This could include the establishment of a Provincial Research Fund or Foundation similar to the Alberta Heritage Foundation. The establishment of a research institute or new research facilities. The provision of funding for personnel support. Multifactoral positive impacts upon governmental attitudes of philosophy concerning scientific research.
