It is a pleasure to invite you to the 52nd Annual CFBS meeting to be held in Winnipeg June 17-20, 2008. The theme of the 2008 meeting is "Biology of Aging - New Answers to Old Questions". Aging is of course something that impacts us all, and understanding the biological bases of the aging process is important in helping us understand not only why and how our bodies and minds change during this process, but also how to manage and even optimize the evolution of age-related processes, where feasible, to maximize quality of life.

We have put together a highly stimulating and informative program which we hope will foster discussion and debate. Our plenary speaker will be Dr. Leonard Hayflick, a pioneer in the field of the theory of aging, who has given us the provocative title for his lecture, “Aging is No Longer an Unsolved Problem in Biology”. Nine symposia, the titles of which are presented below, will give us a broad view of the biology of aging, from a variety of perspectives:

  1. Nutrition as a determinant of successful aging
  2. Muscles: from molecules to mobility
  3. Dilemmas of drug therapy in the elderly
  4. The role of oxidative stress in the decline of aged muscle
  5. Neuromuscular function and resistance training in older adults -From laboratory research to clinical implications
  6. Calpain: A molecular monkey wrench involved in aging and cell death mechanisms
  7. Cardiovascular System and Ageing: Exercise Blood Flow
  8. The AAA Alarm: Antioxidants, Atherosclerosis and Aging
  9. Biology of Alzheimer and Dementia

The meeting will be held on the Fort Garry campus of the University of Manitoba. I am looking forward to seeing you in June in Winnipeg!
