On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee, I would like to invite you

Annual Meeting of the Canadian Federation of Biological Societies). This
meeting will be held at the University of Guelph from June 21st to June
24th, 2005.
The theme for the meeting is “LIFESTYLE AND MOLECULAR BASES OF
HEALTH AND DISEASE”. Dr. Arend Bonen (Canada Research Chair and
Professor, Department of Human Biology and Nutritional Sciences, University
of Guelph) is coordinating the scientific program.
The annual meeting is designed to attract an international audience with
a focus on a specific scientific theme. The conference will include the
Kaplan lecture, the Centrum lecture, plenary speakers, symposia, graduate
student competitions, oral communication and poster sessions as well as
social events.
Plenary Speakers
Dr. Claude Bouchard (Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge,
Louisiana, USA) will speak on the basis of obesity as influenced by genetics.
Dr. Bente Pedersen (University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark) will
speak on muscle as an endocrine organ (molecular basis), with implications
for glucose metabolism.
Dr. Amira Klip (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto) will speak on the
molecular regulation of glucose transport.
Symposia
To date, seven symposia have been organized dedicated to the overall theme
with a focus on cardiovascular health, diabetes, exercise, nutrition, and
obesity. The titles of the symposia are:

- Regulation of Oxygen Delivery to Skeletal Muscle
- Regulation of Food Intake and Interaction with Exercise
- Metabolic Dysregulation in Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes
- Nutragenomics
- Cardiovascular Symposium
- Infant Feeding Patterns Related to Later Outcome
Four speakers, who are experts in their research areas, will take part
in each symposium.
Guelph is only an hour’s drive west of Toronto and 70 km from Pearson
International Airport. Within 20 to 90 minutes drive from Guelph, there
are a number of other attractions for excursions; for example, the Niagara
region, Stratford and local Mennonite communities. See you in June!
